STAMPING BASICS

Inks

There are different types of ink pads that you can use when stamping.  Stampin’ Up! has amazing color coordination and that starts with our Ink Pads and Refills! Here is a rundown of the  Stampin’Up! Ink options, and their uses .  Also tips on selecting the right ink for your stamping projects.

***Click on picture to view in greater detail.

Basic Stampin’ Up! Ink Pads:

  • Stampin’ Up! Ink pads are a  water based dye based ink pad.  It is  a great ink to use because it dries quickly on all types of paper and also works well on glossy card stock and vellum. Because they dry quickly, you can stamp one image and then immediately stamp another or add an embellishment to your project without smudging the ink.
  • Dye inks do tend to fade over time, so you should not use them for scrapbook projects unless they specifically say they are archival dye ink pads.
  • You should also avoid using a dye ink pad when embossing because they dry too quickly and wont hold embossing powder.
  • I would also not recommend using them if you plan to color in your image with markers or watercolors because the images tend to smear if they get wet.

Available in 50 Stampin’ Up! colors

Momento Ink Pad:

  • Water based  ink pad.
  • Resist Fading
  • Available in Tuxedo Black
  • Use with Alcohol Markers (Stampin’ Blends)
  • • Best Black for images that are not going to be colored and for greetings

Stazon Ink

  • Permanent Solvent Ink Pads
  • These are fabulous inks for stamping and work great for water coloring or coloring with  Stampin’ Up!  markers since they do not smudge when they get wet.
  • These can be use on non porous surfaces such as tiles, velum , etc.
  • They do stain your stamp, so you will want to purchase a stamp cleaner made just for solvent inks such as Stazon Cleaner.

Versa-mark:

  • Pigment Ink Pad
  • These are thick, slow drying inks which make them great for embossing They stay wet long enough to hold the powders. They won’t dry on glossy paper or velum unless you emboss and heat set them.
  • Perfect for creating tone on tone images or greetings.
  • These are perfect inks for tile or glass
  • You can heat set them with a heat gun for faster drying.

Markers

  • Stampin’ Up has Stampin Write Markers which are a water based marker that you can use to color directly onto a stamp to create color changes for fine detail.
  • Stampin’ Up also has alcohol based markers to color in stamped images.  These colors are vibrant and can be blended with the blending pen.

Stamps

Stampin’ Up! offers many great stamp sets
Photopolymer StampsThese are often called “clear” stamps and are fantastic for placement on your cards since you can see through them as you are stamping. As you can see in the photo, they do tend to stain, especially when using shades of “red.” But, as long as you clean them as you go, the stained colors do not effect your stamping.

  • If they loose their “stick,” clean the stamps and your clear blocks with alcohol wipes or run them under water.
  • It is normal for them  to stain. especially with darker toned inks.  This does not impact how they stamp at all.
  • With the new style, remove the stamps from the plastic they are on and stick right to your case. You can now see the image on the case liner. This helps you make sure you don’t loose any and always have the complete set of stamps.

Cling  Mount StampsThese are the “red rubber” card making stamps that Stampin’ Up! carries. They call them “cling mount” because of the label you put on them.  When they arrive from Stampin Up! they will come with a set of sticker labels that you will put on the red rubber.  Instructions for this are on the inside of the stamp case when you receive them.  No worries!!!  Its actually quite easy to do.

Paper is another important ingredient when stamping and paper crafting.

Stampin’ Up!  has SO many wonderful options to choose from.
